Breastplate of righteousness
Ephesians 6:14b and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
The other part of the armour the soldiers put on was the breast plate. It did something very important, to protect the soldiers heart.
What's in the heart? Everything. If one's natural heart isn't functioning, that man is dead. It means it's in our power to protect our hearts and hinder it from dying. Bible says in Proverbs 4:23 that we should guard our hearts with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life. We need to protect our hearts from selfishness, hurts, offences, bitterness, unforgiveness if we are to serve God well.
Liken it to two people who are deeply in love, they are vibrant, exciting and interested in all that life brings. When one breaks the others heart, it's like life is sucked out of the other. They tend to change completely until they heal of such brokenness.
What's this righteousness that Paul talks about? It's the righteousness of Faith. It's the one we receive by faith in Christ. No one can boast that they are righteous through the law except Jesus. Thus the righteousness which protects us and which you should remind the devil in times of attacks is that which you obtained by faith.
Even when you think you are good enough the devil will still poke you to tell you that you aren't there yet. So what defends us to be confident in those times is to be conscious of our right standing with God in Christ. When we are at our worst, the enemy will whisper that we are good for nothing, and that we don't deserve to draw near to God. In those times we need to repent and affirm our right standing before God.
When you do this, you will always serve, always minister despite the weakness of your flesh. You will always be confident of your ministry regardless of the fact that you are simply starting out and do not know everything. We won't know everything before we launch out to do things that God instructs us. We should draw our confidence from God, not in our own selves.
