Desire for ministry

1 Timothy 3:1 This [is] a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. How can we become good disciples of our Lord? Principal thing is one must have a strong desire for ministry.  There are some many God loving people but I feel so sorry for them for they have no desire of any sort for ministry. Whether you serve God or not, you will go to heaven since what takes you to heaven is the blood of Jesus. But more to that, there is a great blessing in serving God. It's such a privilege to be a coworker with God. In fact men who have had visions of heaven say there are many men of God in heaven who regret for not having served Him well.  Friends, serving God gives you fulfilment that no money will ever give you. Desire to serve God, desire to become a disciple who disciples others, desire to have huge impact in the kingdom, desire to become a pastor, desire to plant a church or among those that pioneer to plant one someday etc. All those are go...

Prayer

1 Timothy 2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks, be made for all men; One of the core principle of becoming a good and effective disciple is prayer. A true disciple must be a prayerful person.  Become a man or woman of prayer. Make sure you have a prayer life, incorporate prayer in your life, be consistent at it.    Like a tool in a mechanics toolbox, so is prayer to the discipler, you cannot do without it. Further scriptures   Ephesians 6:18 "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;"

True sons II

(Php 2:22)NKJV But ye know his proven character, that as a son with [his] father, he hath served with me in the gospel.  What makes a true son is character. Character gives people longevity in ministry is character, not your gift. You are nothing without character. So many people are gifted but have zero character. They lack the character of a true disciple.  The church has not been short of winning souls through evangelism and crusades, but we donot have many disciples or sons. The great commission is about making disciples. Souls always come and go but sons stay and serve. As you serve more in the church, you stop praying that God adds you more church members but sons or disciples. You encounter a first timer who comes and tells you, "pastor, wherever you go I will go and wherever you fall I will fall," yet after three months, you don’t see them. But like apostle Paul, may God give us sons and daughters, not just people to give us lip service.  Stand out and don’t just ...

True sons I

Philippians 2:19-22 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.  Paul testifies about his son Timothy in a powerful way in our theme scripture. I wonder how Timothy felt when he read it. Did he develop any pride as a result? Some do when they are exalted like that but we don't see it in Timothy atleast. Can your mentor boast openly about you like that and it doesn't in any way puff you? "One who is to you likeminded, who naturally cares for the state of his church members, who does seek their own but the things which are Jesus Christ's," what a CV? Am certain Paul could say all these about him because he himself had the same traits for it is said yo...

OUT - Reach to a dying world

Image
Mark 3:13-15 And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth [unto him] whom he would: and they came unto him. And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:  Jesus always had Up In Out rythms with his disciples. Besides the times when he taught them-Up, communed with them-In, he went out with them on missions-Out. He did not just have them around just to have a good time. He had an intention of giving them something to do, something that was worth doing for the rest of their lives. In fact, they died for that cause. He loved them so much in that He did not afford to leave them without a mission.  Disciplers, pastors, and gifted men in the five fold ministry sometimes do the opposite these days. They speak about grace, love, caring for one another, loving on ourselves, but they don't send people out to evangelise to the masses. So they leave that to a special evangeli...

IN - connection with each other

Image
Mark 6:31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. Remember the Up In Out strategy?  The Up strategy includes things like Prayer which aligns the team and individual to God's heart. The IN is the rhythm we have when we fellowship with each other. This happens either indoor or outdoor. Since we are a family of disciples, it is important to loosen up, eat, play and have fun times. It should not be business as usual during those times but the aim is to connect with each other deeply.  Jesus called his disciples to rest and have times alone with them. He visited their homes and saw their kinsmen. The Bible for example records that he healed Peter's mother in law. It means he had gone to visit Peter. He dinned with them on various occasions. And what do you think transpires over dinner? Fellowship,  laughter and connecting. During In times, two things ...

Up with the Father

Image
Luke 6:12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. There's a famous strategy Mike Breen talks about in his book building a discipling culture called the up-in-out that Jesus and the apostles used when they were about the mission of spreading the gospel on the earth.  Jesus depended on God entirely for the success of his ministry. His up was prayer. The Bible records times when he spent all night in prayer to God. The disciples also did the same.  We need the corporate times as well as the individual times of prayer to get Strengthened and receive direction from our heavenly Father. It is normally said that as long as the power lines are connected to the source of electricity, power will always flow.  Our power source is God, a daily communion with Him as a group as well us on the individual basis is essential to the success of growing a big family of Jesus followers.  Other forms of up incl...

The Jesus movement

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. How did Jesus start a movement that is still expanding today? Did He use force, or the established religious system of the day? He did not use any of those but ordinary men and women to extend his mission.  Likewise, what can we learn from Jesus that we can use to expand His mission wherever we find ourselves? We need to do it the Jesus way. Jesus started a family of disciples whom he gave a mission. The mission was not to do charity or philanthropy but to spread the Gospel to the uttermost parts of the world.  Any family has things that they do together on a regular basis. Some of those are to eat, play, celebrate together. There's a way those things bind the family together. Jesus' family of disciples had similar rhythms. They ministered together, had fellowship together and prayed together. They did things in community and that was where discipleshi...

The character of a disciple

Image
(Php 2:22)NKJV But ye know his proven character, that as a son with [his] father, he hath served with me in the gospel.  The success of discipleship endeavours are all hinged on character. If it's a building, then character is like the main pillar for the building to stand. As one under discipleship, you are going nowhere without a good character however gifted you may be. No one likes to disciple, mentor or apprentice anyone who has character flaws. Such cannot take long in a discipling relationship.  To change your character, accept correction, rebukes, and instruction in those areas where you are weak from your discipler. And I am sure Timothy got a good dose of them from Paul. If the character is good, your gift will be enjoyed by many without offending them.  A good character shapes you into a true son in the faith. Sons take on the character of their fathers. Sons are different from mere church attendees. They are the real disciples. They are always distinct from th...

The power of discipleship

Philippians 2:19-22 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.  Paul testifies about his son Timothy in a powerful way which speaks much about discipleship in our theme scripture. Can your discipler talk about you like that? Are you likeminded with him in things pertaining ministry? Do you care for the flock of God like he does without being forced? Or you seek your own, things which are not Jesus Christ's.  Discipleship reaches its full completion when your discipler can see in you what he sees in himself. It is enough for you to be like your master. Do not try to be anything that your discipler isn't. If he is zealous for souls, be zealous for souls, if he...

The Word

Image
Deuteronomy 29:29 The secret [things belong] unto the LORD our God: but those [things which are] revealed [belong] unto us and to our children for ever, that [we] may do all the words of this law. God's word is His special revelation to us about Himself, his redemptive plan, and salvation through Jesus. Creation itself indirectly communicates to us about God's existence but will not tell you that Jesus came to die for our sins. We get to know that through God's word. Through God's word, you can actually know who He is, what purpose He carries for this world, and what He desires for you to know. This word was handed to us through the prophets who received it directly from the Lord by dreams and visions.  Anything you need to know for you to believe about God is in His word. It's sufficient for us to believe that He exists and has good plans for us. Any attempt to go above it may land one into err. For that reason, you need to study God's word yourself. If you w...
