The helmet of salvation

Ephesians 6:17a And take the helmet of salvation,

What do helmets do? They offer protection to the head of the soldier. It goes deeper than that, the head has a very crucial element called the mind. Remember in the beginning of this series we saw it vividly that spiritual warfare happens primarily in our minds. Satan is out to attack the mind in various forms.

In our day, you hear a lot of sicknesses which relate to the mind, mental illness. And what causes these illnesses? Things like stress, depression which attack the mind. People have reached peaks of hopelessness yet they look to be more blessed than their counterparts in yester years. It's an an attack of the mind.

What has come to my mind is this verse in Hebrews 12:3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Other versions use the word discouraged in your souls. What will overcome such discouragement, distress etc is to have a firm grasp of hope. What's hope then? A positive expectation of good. Hope protects our minds. Hope makes us lively. One preacher said you should always keep interested and interesting in the relationships we have with one another and never allow circumstances steal our hopes and smiles.

If you look critically, you are better than millions and millions of people out there but because you are not exercising contentment and hope, you are ever discouraged by what will happen or has already happened in the past. Pr David Ankunda always says we need to put things in perspective. That situation which is making you worried, hopeless or worried now, will it worry you 50 years to come? In eternity will it even be an issue? So why are you so bothered at fixing it that it has caused you to lose your joy, peace and happiness? If it will be very minor in eternity, it should be now. We should not magnify it beyond the level it deserves.

One other motivational speaker said the reason discouragement is high these days is because in real time people are getting news from allover the world at just a mere click. They are also exposed to those are doing so well by the gadgets in their palms that they start to actually compare themselves with them and they get discouraged. Back then, news would be heard in distant parts of the world days after it had happened and that wouldn't cause so much panic. It's an information age which can work to your advantage or disadvantage.

Bible says we are saved by hope. Therefore know from today that you need to wear your helmet of salvation which comes through hope as a clothing whenever discouragement comes knocking at your door.
