Set your heart on God

Psalms 62:10 Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart [upon them].

Riches and possessions have a temptation they create when one gets them, they compete for the time we would have given to the Lord for instance the person who used to pray, now finds it hard because the new flat screen with a cable TV they got has many channels they want to explore so time for God in prayer is reduced, some after acquiring a lot of land spend their weekends visiting them instead of going to church etc.

A story is told of some man of God who has so many keys to the many houses he has been given in many countries of the world yet he has never even visited them. Getting the houses has never hindered even his pursuit for God, evangelism, planting churches etc. How about another man of God who received 500 keys for SUV cars on his birthday? I have not yet heard that he fell back from seeking God because of them. One car like this can cause someone to abandon their responsibilities at church! God help us. But again, how many cars can one drive at ago? How many houses can one live in at ago? How many beds can you sleep in at ago? However much you have hundreds of all these, you can only use just one at a time. If you have one of these, be content and focus on the ministry and serve as though you have all.

If one can gain a mastery over themselves to remain constant in the things of God yet still have these material possessions coming in more and more, that man will actually get more of them.

It's natural to be thrown out of balance when one acquires a new property, got married, graduated with a degree, boarded a plane etc for the first time but after the emotions of those first time experiences have subsided, you should be able to learn to live with it and yet still pursue God. But if it completely takes away the place of God, then it has done more harm than good. How did our fathers Abraham, David do it? They did not set their hearts on the riches but on the Lord.

A story is told of a rich man who came with a prayer request. He had trouble paying tithe from the much money God had blessed him with yet in his poverty days he used to pay it faithfully. Instead of giving the man much more trouble, the man of God was like "why don't we pray that God takes away the businesses you have so that you are back to the poverty you used to be in and pay it as you used to?" That was enough to bring back sense into the man to continue paying his tithe. We need rich Christian men and women storm overnights, lunch hours, midweek prayer meetings in honor of the God who gave them the riches without giving excuses that they are busy.

The story should be that when one possesses more, gains a little more comfort materially or gained some success, the more they should pursue the God who gave them the riches and not the reverse.
