Showing Mercy
Romans 12:6-8 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, [let us prophesy] according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, [let us wait] on [our] ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, [let him do it] with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
Mercy is when one gets kindness that they don't deserve. Mercy needs to be extended to those who are sick, have needs, or are in dire trouble.
How many will come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ when Mercy is extended to them! The world today doesn't give anything for free. But mercy is handed out freely. These days when someone gives you something for free, better ask why because they might demand a pay back in one way or the other.
But we Christians extend it on behalf of Christ to receive the glory. That's why whenever someone thanks us for an act of mercy we don't receive it directly, we instead respond glory be to God because He has used us to extend it.
Celebrities of this world do acts of mercy and they go public about it. That's not proper. By that we are exposing the nakedness of Jesus Christ. It's better to do it in secret. When they do such, they don't attribute such kind acts to anyone but themselves. This is self glorification.
Acts of mercy ought to be done in cheerfulness and not in grumbling. There are those who come to the rescue of the orphans by paying their tuition but they don't do it in cheerfulness. They see themselves as a god to them. They grumble, complain, they say words like, "if it wasn't for me, you would be nobody's." That is adding more injury to the situation. If you are to help, don't surround it with nagging words otherwise the help is not pleasing to God. We are vessels, instruments in God's hand, handed with tools like money to rescue others. The moment we act in pride yet God is using us by his grace, is the beginning of our downfall. The downfall may not be seen now but God's word never fails. It may happen in the time of your children and all the riches you seemed to accumulate in your time will be wasted by them.
When we were in need, mercy said no, I will never let you go. We have benefitted from mercy in one way or the other, above all mercy was extended to us by Jesus forgiving our sins, let's extend it to someone else.
