Giving till it hurts
Mark 12:41-44 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called [unto him] his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all [they] did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, [even] all her living.
It's normal for many including I to give what we can afford to part with. It's not usual to give beyond what we cannot afford. I call the first sensible giving and the second one nonsensical giving.
The widow gave her two remaining coins and it got Jesus' commendation. The others gave pocket change. The widow gave until it hurt. She might have given her Penney's for her food that day.
Have you ever visited someone who gives you more than you expect them to? The moment you arrive, they order for some drinks, snacks, give you food and yet at the same time put on a good smile. But when you look around, the situation they are in is really alarming! Those are the kind who give beyond their means. The meal they would have given to their children who happen to be many actually give it you! I always feel touched by such acts when I visit such folks or go for missions and those are the kinds of reception we get. They give you the best reception beyond their means
Sometimes we preachers are responsible for people acting so safe with their giving. But there are folks who actually give away their transport and walk back home. There are some who give their tuition, capital for business, their best clothes and best shoes. Some students miss lectures or tests to go for mission. Now I wonder how you can categorize such but I used to think they are crazy but they are giving sacrificially. And they don't blame themselves or blame the church for "taking" their money but are happy having done that. It's those in the flesh who say so.
If you're senses get the better of you all the time, you won't give sacrificially.
2 Corinthians 8:3 For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more. And they did it of their own free will.
