Your lifestyle and your ministry

Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all [men], and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Can a man carry fire in his bosom and his clothes don't get burnt? Not at all. Many Christians play around with what shouldn't be played with. Their behaviours make them do things they ought not to do, and that affects their Christian witness.

One day, I was in a Bible study, and the topic of lifestyle came up. The way believers want their pastors to live very straight lives is alarming. One reached the extent of saying, "I understand when a Christian sins, but I cannot when it is my pastor." Such a statement means leaders should live morally sound lives because they are leading God's flock. But Christians are leaders too in the communities they live in. They are the souls winners wherever their pastors don't reach. They are the light and the salt wherever they are. If they don't shine, darkness will prevail, and if they lose their saltiness, how will the world around them be preserved? But the negative side to such thinking I stated earlier is that it creates passivity in believers. It will lead to the attitude of "let pastors do all the preaching, teaching and soul winning and for the rest of us let's compromise in one way or another." That means not much can be done. Pastors are few. They cannot do the work alone. In fact, it's the sheep to give birth to fellow sheep, not the shepherd.

Sin numbs you. It affects your conscience. Your heart judges you when you sin. It affects your ministry. It makes you lose your confidence in the things of God. Sin stumbles others, and they close their hearts to the message of God you try to preach. Many great men, even in the Bible, have fallen because of sin. As much as you can, live a holy life if you desire to continue in the ministry of soul winning. There are many keys for success and longevity in ministry, but one of them is living a lifestyle consistent with God's Word.

Many want to see God, but they cannot because you have to live holy for that to happen. Your ministry and lifestyle are so closely connected to each other. Your lifestyle cannot be in opposition to the Word and your ministry prospers, no way. God won't promote fools, ask Saul in the Bible. When it comes to ministry He desires perfection in His ministers. He has placed high standards for His ministers.

All of us have been called to the ministry of soul winning. Let's live a lifestyle consistent with the Word.
