The Paraclete
John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever--
The paraclete, who is the Holy Spirit, is a Greek word which means one who is called alongside to help. He is called alongside to be of help to you while you do the praying, the ministration of the Word, etc. He does not do the work for you but aids you in doing the work you have been called to do.
He is the perfect helper we need for the ministry God has called us into. Otherwise, nothing much can be done without Him. If, on the other hand, we don't move in what God has told us to do, He cannot be of help. What do I mean, if you don't open your mouth to pray or preach, He cannot inspire a closed mouth but the mouth which is already talking. It's like a moving ship, which is swayed in a different direction by the wind. It's only then that the captain can bring it back to the right course.
It's also similar to a woman married to a man without a vision. She will not be of any use because she has been called upon to help. She will simply be frustrated because her role is to come alongside one that is moving and help them. He is also called the strengthener, counsellor, etc. He strengthens and counsels one who really needs strength and counsels one who does need it. For instance, the setbacks encountered in ministry, we are strengthened by Him and encouraged not to stop by the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We receive His counsel when we are at a crossroads of making key decisions that may mean life or death. Some also need Revelation in God's word but don't try to read, or study it. He cannot help one who is not attempting anything at all. Even the reminding us of the Word when we are in need of it means you have already kept it in your mind and heart and He reminds you of the deposit that you have placed in you. Some effort is required on your part child of God.
I heard a statement I will never forget, that the Holy Spirit will not do for you what you are meant to do. What are you doing that warrants His help?
