Jehovah Nissi
Exodus 17:15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:
Nissi means my banner or standard. Jehovah Nissi thus means the Lord my or our banner. This was a revelation that Moses got after defeating the Amalekites at Rephidim. After the victory, he pronounced that "The LORD is my banner."
Whenever armies would march towards battle, they would raise a banner at the front. This banner or a flag would identify them uniquely from the enemy and show where they truly belonged. A flag of one country cannot be the same as the flag of any other. No army can have two flags at the same time to avoid confusion among the troops. This teaches us that when the battle is raging, one should never be neutral; they will be misunderstood or thought of as an accomplice. You should have a side and demonstrate it by siding with the banner where your army assembles. The disciples knew about this when they saw one cast out devils in the name of Jesus, yet he was not walking amongst them. Jesus told them, " Whoever is not against us is for us. "The Philistines also knew this when David was among them, yet they were going to fight their enemy, Israel. They knew that David would turn against them once the battle raged. They had to persuade their king to let him go.
We face battles daily. But our victory is by God and through God. Christians should identify with the LORD so that they are not mistaken. He fights for us, and He fights very well. That is why the Bible says vengeance belongs to God. We should not fight naturally but rely on the LORD to fight for us spiritually. This is what brought Israelites victory in every battle. The nations around them feared them for that. This is true because in the old times, men first consulted their gods before going for battle. They knew that aid from the other world was essential for their success. David knew it when He always consulted the LORD before any engagement. Saul in his fallen state consulted a medium!
Raising our banner in front of advancing enemy troops is not a luxury or for showmanship; it is a necessity. It may mean a life-or-death scenario. We need to raise our banner so high that it causes a distinction between us and the world, for the Bible says this is the victory we have in Jesus, even our faith. Raise your faith like a banner just like the Israelites raised God as their banner.
