Contentment III

Ecclesiastes 9:7 Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

There's a lot of encouragement nowadays to look like everyone else if you identify that they are better off in one way or the other. The irony with that is that people lose the gratitude and contentment of where they are at the moment if they aren't careful. The theme scripture encourages us to enjoy your bread, drink with a merry heart. My focus is the "your" in that statement and not the neighbours.

It is always said that grass looks greener on the other side, but the day you get there, you won't want what you find there or it may not be a rosy as it was made or appeared to be. My pastor admonishes us through those lines whenever he hears so and so left the ministry for a "new" one in town which seems to be rocking the boat. The day you know the details of things is the day you realise every person, ministry, business has issues.

Life may be deceptive. And many are deceived to undermine what is theirs and lust for what's not theirs. Everything looks colourful until you know the details. The lesson I learnt over Easter was so profound. One person told me, "Eriya, you better uphold your marriage, love your wife, keep each other well, fight for your marriage, it's yours that's good." Up to now those words stuck deep especially "it's what is yours that's good." You need to beautify what is yours. Iron that one shirt as if it's from the best designer around town, keep your home well, maximise the opportunities, the good things God has given you, if you are faithful with the little, God will entrust you with much.

One financial expert always says don't try to be like the Jonses, because the Jonses may be broke and in too much debt trying to cover up in the name of appearances. Sometimes I joke with my wife and say, some of those Jonses may even be unfaithful with their tithe that's why they seem to have a lot! Your neighbour eats chicken, you buy it immediately even when you cannot afford it, your neighbour takes their kids to an international school and jump on the bandwagon etc. It's time you enjoyed where you are knowing full well that it's not the end. Don't try to compete with anyone, enjoy where you are at.

Like Paul admonishes, rejoice always even in the worst of moments. Have faith for what's coming ahead that it will all be well.
