God of covenants II
Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
Many Bible scholars agree that there are 7 covenants that God made with man. But when you look at all of them, they are all primarily rooted in God’s grace. Always remember that whenever God called or calls a man or woman His primary intention is to show His grace and goodness to them.
The first covenant was the Adamic covenant. In Genesis 1:26 basically, God creates man and plants them in a garden and instructs them that of every tree they can freely enjoy except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. What a good God. He planted man in a garden of abundance and plenty. His mercy to Adam and Eve was seen even after the man broke the covenant by removing them from the garden of Eden to prevent them from eating the tree of life and live forever in misery of sin.
The second was the covenant made with Noah. Genesis 8 and 9 talk about how man became so evil and God judged the earth with floods that flooded the earth. Every living creature was destroyed except Noah and his family. After the flood God swore never to destroy the earth again because of man’s sin by giving a sign of the rainbow, a sign of His mercy. Even in our day, God’s heart is not to judge people. His heart is to show them love and compassion. Paul talks of a God in Ephesians of a God who is full of mercy for His great love toward us. What a good God!
Covenant three was the Abrahamic convenant. An amazing covenant in that He actually reminds the children of Israel over and over that He was visiting them because of the covenant He had made with their father Abraham. God called Abraham in Genesis 12 and promised to make him great and special although formerly he was a worshipper of other gods!
We see grace at work in Abraham's life for he not only turned around to serve the true God, he became great and rich in livestock, in silver, in gold, in maid servants and male servants. Since we are children of Abraham by faith, such grace is extended to us too, hallelujah!
