Genesis 4:9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where [is] Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: [Am] I my brother's keeper? Adonai simply means Lord or master. When one is Lord over you, it means they have some kind of authority over you. It's first usage was in Genesis 4 when God spoke to Cain after He had killed his brother Abel. God is Lord over all that He created. Some preachers have coined words in those lines to refer to Jesus by saying that "if Jesus is not Lord over your life, then He is not Lord at all." He is either Lord or Lord, nothing less and nothing more.
